An Englishwoman in Blue Whale country
Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne on the role played by Sue Evans in launching whale watching in Sri Lanka
The story that I broke in May 2008 that Southern Sri Lanka is the best place in the world for Blue Whales had a varied cast of supporting characters. One of them was an Englishwoman who had fallen in love with the island. Sue Evans first visited Sri Lanka in the 1980s and in 2002 bought a bungalow at Polwatta Modera near Mirissa.
Property of the Month
Half an acre of stunning ocean front property, surrounded by a lush garden full of mature coconut palms, Situated 1.5 KM from the Galle Matara road and only 15 minutes away from the supermarkets and the banks of Matara makes it an ideal location for a peaceful holyday home in a very convenient neighborhood. Given that it is only 150 M away from the stunning pollhana beach which is ideal for swimming all year around makes it even more attractive for a family that loves the beach but also does not want the hassle of having a public beach in front of their door step.
Villa of the Month
Chandolu is a beautifully and stylishly renovated villa overlooking the ramparts of Galle’s 17th century Dutch Fort – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Re-designed with a pleasant blend of modern chic with old world charm, this two-bedroomed villa is uniquely located to give you a view of both the ocean and glorious sunsets over the Ramparts.

Sri Lankan fare is often mistaken for yet another Indian regional cuisine. Yet to the culinary explorer, Sri Lankan Food is as intriguing and unique as the many other customs of this island paradise. In spite of its tiny size, Sri Lanka boasts an amazing variety of food and styles of cooking. The island has a rich heritage of indigenous dishes and its regional cooking is strongly individual and varied.
