Galle promises boom with economic development

Socio-economic development of the Galle district has taken a high priority during the past four years. Under the Mahinda Chinthana policy of President Mahinda Rajapaksa now the long neglected Galle district was developing rapidly day by day. The Galle city capital of the Southern Province was badly destroyed by Tsunami. But now the city was completely changed. A number of constructions currently were going on and some were completed. The Galle city has a fresh new look with a beach garden, conservation of the ancient Fort, the reconstruction of the town’s water ways and a face lift being given to the marine drive.

Galle port development project is one of the main constructions currently going on in the Galle town. The government plans to develop the Galle Harbour as a tourist harbour. The port will be constructed to berth 40 craft with sails to attract international sailing enthusiasts. The estimated cost of the Galle Port Development Project is US dollar 170 million. The Japanese Government has granted US$ 135 million to develop the Galle port as a regional port. The Port’s construction work which commenced in December 2008 is scheduled to be completed by mid 2012.

Joyful Christmas in Jaffna

For the first time in 30 years, the sounds and lights of firecrackers dominated the skies of Jaffna, replacing the deadly sounds of artillery shelling, rocket launchers, aerial bombings and machine guns when the Christmas midnight mass was held in the churches of Jaffna, informed sources said.

The Catholic Bishop of Jaffna, Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Savuntharanayagam conducted the midnight mass at St. Mary’s Church, Jaffna with the participation of thousands of devotees who were mainly from the fishing community in the coastal areas of Jaffna.

The fisher folk in Jaffna were the worst affected by the war as there were restrictions in the seas for fishing for three decades. With the end of the war early this year, several measures were taken by the Government to rebuild the lives of fisher folk in Jaffna with the removal of restrictions in fishing in the Northern seas.

Cruise Calls - Sri Lanka lures Indian tourists by sea

Sri Lanka has struck a deal with the world's fifth largest cruise line to attract Indian tourists to the island by cruise ship, officials said.

Louis Cruise Lines, based in Cyprus, has begun weekly calls at Colombo port with its cruise ship Aquamarine which can carry 1,200 passengers.

Galle Season 2009

‘Galle Season 2009’ the buoyant annual gala organized by the Galle Library Association was ceremonially opened on the 28th under the auspices of Southern Province Governor Kumari Balasooriya, Agriculture Minister Hemakumara Nanayakkara and Galle Mayor Methsiri de Silva.

The celebration will continue till December 31. A concept of Agriculture Minister Hemakumara Nanayakkara as Galle Library President the event is aimed at upholding the glorious customs and traditions of the Galle city to capture national and international attention.

Government to renovate 13 airstrips

The Ports and Aviation Ministry will renovate 13 inland airstrips to boost the inland air transportation system.

Under this initiative Polonnaruwa, Hingurakgoda, Palali, Ratmalana, Koggala, Katukurunda, Weeravila, Trincomalee, Sigiriya, Batticaloa, Ampara, Kankesanthurai and Vavuniya airstrips will be renovated.

Oil Bids - Sri Lanka ready to offer more oil exploration blocks

Sri Lanka is ready to calls for bids for oil exploration in more blocks in the island's north-west as well as the south, Petroleum Resources Minister A H M Fowzie said.

He said he expects more interest this time now that the ethnic war is over and Cairn India has begun seismic surveys in preparation for drilling test wells in the Gulf of Mannar off the island's north-west.
